When scientists attempt to understand the effects of introducing new substances or altering the process of the human body, they often start their searches with models. However, these models are not the human subjects they are meant to recapitulate, a difference that has restrained discovery and delayed effective cures. Such discrepancies have guided the development of organoids, three-dimensional cultures of stem-cell-derived tissues that enhance the toolkit scientists use to make breakthroughs.
