     Ever since antibiotics became commercially available in the 1940s, antibiotic resistance has become a growing global public health concern: for every new drug, within a few years, the targeted bacteria develop immunity to it, calling for increasingly powerful antibiotics. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that more than 23,000 people in the U.S. die each year from antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and that number is on the rise.

     Forget radiation. Forget chemotherapy. A potential new cure for cancer is on the rise: one that does not involve hair loss, nausea, and sleepless nights. In July 2018, researchers at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota discovered that injecting senescent cells into mice resulted in loss of physical function, Subsequently, injecting senolytic drugs not only slowed physical deterioration, but also extended lifespans. 

     But let's take a step back: what are senescent calls and senolytics?
